Acemioğlanı (or Acemi in short) was the name given to the janissary novices. Recruited via the process of “Devshirme”, the young newly recruits were expected to serve the veterans until they were accepted into the Hearth. They had separate barracks and they were employed in the big construction projects within the capital, İstanbul. The Novice units had the duty to protect the city whenever the janissary army left for battle.
